Civil War: prime reazioni dalla Premiere

Le prime reazioni a Civil War dalla prima portano un messaggio collettivo: “Un ammonimento spaventoso come l’inferno”.

Il provocatorio film della casa di produzione A24 e dello scrittore e regista Alex Garland ha avuto la sua prima mondiale al South by Southwest Film & TV Festival giovedì notte.

“There is nothing quite like it and you’re not ready.”

Proiettato ad una gremita platea al Paramount Theater di Austin, Civil War è un omaggio al giornalismo di guerra. Il film si allontana dal voler spiegare la politica che ha portato al conflitto centrale, raffigura invece le praticità e gli orrori che accompagnano una guerra civile nell’America moderna.

Le prime reazioni del pubblico sono al limite del delirante.  Gli spettatori lo definiscono un film avvincente e inquietante al tempo stesso, mentre la prima ondata di recensioni critiche fanno guadagnare al film un 83 percento di “Fresh score” su Rotten Tomatoes.

Trama

Con il suo nuovo film, l’acclamato Garland immagina una distopia ambientata in un futuro prossimo in cui gli Stati Uniti sono stati spezzati sotto il dominio autoritario di un presidente a tre mandati. Ad interpretarlo è Nick Offerman.

La storia segue una giornalista, Kirsten Dunst, e i suoi colleghi mentre cercano di attraversare uno stato ostile e diviso dell’America nella speranza di intervistare il presidente mentre forze ribelli che cercano di rovesciarlo si avvicinano.

Gran parte dell’avventura del road trip ricorda vagamente il film che ha fatto esplodere Garland: 28 Days Later. Questa volta però con soldati miliziani amorali che imbracciano fucili d’assalto e che si nascondono ad ogni angolo invece chezombie.

Critica

Anche i critici sono in gran parte positivi. Civil War tuttavia ha fatto sollevare diverse sopracciglia per il suo timing, esce infatti in mezzo ad un anno elettorale controverso in cui il presidente Joe Biden ha affermato che “democracy is at stake” dati i precedenti del suo avversario, Donald Trump, di tentativi di sovversione delle leggi elettorali.

Se l’idea di una guerra civile moderna potrebbe sembrare lontana, un sondaggio del 2022 condotto da YouGov e The Economist ha rilevato che il 40 percento degli americani crede che una nuova guerra civile sia almeno in qualche modo probabile nei prossimi 10 anni.

Quando gli è stato chiesto quando ha scritto il film, Garland ha risposto:

“It was four years ago. I wrote it back then and sent it to A24 and they just said, ‘Yup, all good,” which was surprising. This is a brave film to finance, so it was super appreciated.”

Garland è stato a lungo in affari con A24, si dal suo debutto alla regia con Ex Machina. Il film viene considerato il più grande swing dello studio indipendente fino ad oggi. Civil War non offre molte spiegazioni su come il paese arrivi al suo stato di rottura e pericolo, il pubblico sa solo che il presidente ha sciolto l’FBI, il regista ha detto essere una scelta intenzionale, nelle sue parole:

“The film is intended to be a conversation. It is not asserting things. You want to leave space for people to bring themselves to the conversation. It’s important that it was a two way street.”

A Civil War partecipa tra gli altri un gruppo variegato di musicisti, tra cui Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson e Sonoya Mizuno.
